Application Title:

Stimulating endogenous muscle stem cells to counter muscle wasting

Public Abstract:
Research Objective

We will test a novel target to augment endogenous muscle stem cell function and restore strength systemically in sarcopenia.

Impact

Sarcopenia can be highly disabling and has limited treatment options, identification of an effective therapy that enhances regeneration of skeletal muscle would be of significant clinical benefit.

Major Proposed Activities

["To characterize the effect of inhibition of our enzymatic target on aged muscle force ", "To characterize the effect of inhibition of our enzymatic target on aged muscle stem cell expansion and function ", "To characterize the effect of our enzymatic target on aged human muscle stem cells"]
Statement of Benefit to California:
California is the most populous state, with an increasing elderly population. Sarcopenia affects ~ 15% of people over age 65 and represent significant risks for adverse health outcomes such as hospitalization, disabilities, falls and mortality and cost ~$20 billion in annual healthcare expenditures. A lack of treatments highlights a need for new stem cell therapies to improve aging muscles and their stem cells. Our therapeutic stands to revolutionize treatment of sarcopenia.
