Stem Cell Research for Neurological Disorders: A Case Study in Ethical and Policy Issues in ALS Research
Grant Type:
Grant Number:
CG1-07599
Project Objective:
  • From the PI:
  • CIRM’s mission statement identifies the need for the “highest ethical standards” in the pursuit of discoveries relevant to stem cell treatments and cures. In order to identify these highest standards and define the practices that will make it possible for the stem cell research community to abide by them, meetings are necessary that foster education and deliberation among stem cell researchers, patients, bioethicists, regulatory officials and others about the complex and often novel ethical issues that characterize stem cell research.
  • We seek support for an inaugural meeting, hosted at UC Davis, of what we hope will become an annual ethics and policy symposium for the California stem cell research community. We also seek support because we think the meeting will further catalyze efforts underway at UC Davis to establish an ethics and policy study group within the university’s dynamic stem cell research programs.
