Application Title:

Bridges to Stem Cell Research and Regenerative Medicine

Public Abstract:
This project will support further development of an existing stem cell biology training program featuring varied internship opportunities at established host institutions, a rigorous curriculum, substantive auxiliary training, and advanced stem cell techniques coursework. The institution anticipates that trainees recruited for this project will reflect the diversity of California’s population, supported by targeted outreach through partner community colleges, STEM student interest groups, and community engagement activities, including high school outreach.

This EDUC8: CIRM Bridges Program will provide ten one‑year internships annually over five years. Trainees will be offered research and relevant training opportunities with mentors in fields ranging from basic science of stem cells to translational research, gene therapy, and regenerative medicine. Trainees will complete structured coursework in biotechnology and stem cell biology, including laboratory‑based training in specialized techniques and instrumentation, fluorescence microscopy, bioinformatics, and stem cell‑based biomanufacturing. Additional coursework and training will include advanced stem cell techniques, FAIR principles and data science sharing, research ethics, public science communication, and exposure to the development and regulation of new therapies.

Auxiliary training will include seminars, specialized workshops, opportunities to attend scientific meetings through host institutions, and research presentations at the home institution that support technical skill development and professional growth. Trainees will also participate in patient and healthcare engagement activities, including patient/caregiver panels, to better understand patient experiences, clinical challenges, and the broader context of translating research into therapies. Training will incorporate exposure to ethical, regulatory, and societal considerations relevant to regenerative medicine.

The program will implement an Adaptive Outreach and Recruitment Plan and mentoring practices that incorporate targeted strategies to expand the applicant pool among students from historically underrepresented and socioeconomically disadvantaged backgrounds. By combining established programs and partnerships, rigorous curriculum, professional development mentoring, research experiences at host institutions, the program will contribute to the development of a skilled and diverse workforce prepared to meet the evolving demands of the regenerative medicine field.
Statement of Benefit to California:
This CIRM Bridges to Stem Cell Research and Regenerative Medicine program aligns with and will fulfill the CIRM EDUC8 priorities to create training programs that significantly enhance the technical skills, knowledge, and research experience of a diverse cohort of trainees in stem cell biology, gene therapy, and regenerative medicine, and to foster their commitment to accelerating delivery of stem cell-based technologies and genetic therapies to patients. The program will prepare a skilled and diverse workforce to meet the growing demands of California’s regenerative medicine and biotechnology workforce by combining academic preparation, hands‑on laboratory training, professional development, and mentored research internships aligned with high‑demand careers. The grant supports and enhances an existing stem cell biology training program that includes internship opportunities with mentors in areas ranging from basic stem cell biology to translational research, gene therapy, and regenerative medicine; ten one‑year internships annually over the life of the five year grant; a rigorous curriculum focused on biotechnology and stem cell technologies; established partnerships between the home institution and host institutions; and substantive auxiliary training opportunities, including seminars, specialized workshops, scientific meetings, and research presentations that develop technical, data science, and professional skills. Trainees will also gain exposure to research ethics, public science communication, and the regulatory pathway for therapy development. The program expands access to workforce training through an Adaptive Outreach and Recruitment Plan that prioritizes outreach to students from historically underrepresented and socioeconomically disadvantaged backgrounds at the home institution, partner community colleges, and STEM student interest groups, ensuring that participants reflect the diversity of California’s population. Patient and healthcare engagement activities, community‑facing seminars, and outreach events will build public awareness of regenerative medicine and provide trainees with insight into patient experiences and societal impacts of emerging therapies. These combined attributes will ensure that the program produces highly qualified, diverse personnel prepared for employment in biotechnology, stem cell research, and regenerative medicine, for transfer to 4-year colleges, or continued education in advanced scientific and medical programs, thereby strengthening California’s talent pipeline and supporting the advancement of new therapies that improve health outcomes for its residents.
