Spotlight on Basic Research

On August 20, 2009, the CIRM Governing Board heard from two speakers about the key role of basic research in developing therapies for patients. Irv Weissman described how his lab’s basic research of the immune system led to the identification of blood-forming stem cells and new therapeutic strategies to treat various blood diseases. Arturo Alvarez-Buylla discussed how basic research of brain development has helped his team to zero in on specific neural stem cells that may help repair various neurological disorders.
