The study reveals the origin of newly generated hepatocytes in normal liver and in acute and chronic liver injury states. The findings settle a long-standing debate and facilitate analyses of how liver progenitor cells become hepatocytes and of the origin of liver cancers, which are expected to advance liver cell therapies and anti-liver cancer strategies.
