MEDIA ADVISORY INDEPENDENT CIITZENS’ OVERSIGHT COMMITTEE TO CONSIDER PLANS FOR USE OF NEW FUNDS Board Also to Consider Regulations and Update on Strategic Plan

SAN FRANCISCO, CA – On Tuesday evening and all day Wednesday (August 1-2, 2006), the Independent Citizens’ Oversight Committee (ICOC) for the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine (CIRM) will meet in San Francisco.

 

WHO: Independent Citizens’ Oversight Committee, the 29-member governing board of the CIRM.

WHAT: The ICOC will meet on Tuesday night to consider the values and the mission statement for the CIRM scientific strategic plan. After several public meetings involving members of the Strategic Planning Advisory Committee, the ICOC, CIRM staff and the public, Zach Hall is updating the board and seeking their input on the overall objectives of the Strategic Plan that will cover the next ten years.

The ICOC will also consider a program for initial funding using the recently announced loan from Governor Schwarzenegger.

The board will also consider an update from the Standards Working Group on the CIRM Medical and Ethical Standards Regulations and the Intellectual Property Task Force on the Intellectual Property Policy for Non-profits, which are both undergoing the formal rulemaking process in California. In addition, the board will examine the CIRM budget.

WHY: The ICOC is responsible for the oversight and management of the CIRM, which was established in 2004 with the passage of Proposition 71, the California Stem Cell Research and Cures Initiative. The statewide ballot measure, which provided $3 billion in funding for stem cell research at California universities and research institutions, was approved by California voters, and called for the establishment of an entity to make grants and provide loans for stem cell research, research facilities, and other vital research opportunities.
