William Brody to join CIRM Governing Board

Dr. William R. Brody, president of the Salk Institute for Biological Studies, has been appointed to the Independent Citizens Oversight Committee, the governing board for the California Institute of Regenerative Medicine.

“Dr. Brody is an accomplished scientist, widely recognized among his peers as one of our nations’ forefront thinkers in biomedical engineering and healthcare policy,” said Lieutenant Governor John Garamendi, who appointed Brody to the board.

Brody is renowned for his contributions to medical imaging, having authored more than 100 medical journal articles and co-founding three medical device companies.

“Dr. Brody has had an impressive career,” said Robert N. Klein, Chairman of the ICOC. “His outstanding leadership in advancing research, as President of Johns Hopkins University, as well as his technical expertise, make him a major asset in promoting our mission to advance stem cell science to therapies and cures for patients.”

Brody’s appointment fills the vacancy left by outgoing board member Dr. Marsha Chandler, whom Garamendi also appointed in 2007.

“Dr. Chandler gave us two years of invaluable insight,” Klein said. “We thank her, and we hope we can continue to call on her expertise in her ongoing role as Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer at Salk.”

Before joining the Salk Institute in March 2009, Brody, a native of Stockton, Calif., served for 12 years as President of Johns Hopkins University. He began his presidency in 1996 after serving two years as provost for the Academic Health Center at the University of Minnesota. Prior to becoming provost, Brody held several appointments at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine from 1987 to 1994, including Martin Donner Professor and Director of the Department of Radiology, professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering, professor of Biomedical Engineering and Radiologist-in-Chief of the Johns Hopkins Hospital.

After earning his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in electrical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Brody attended Stanford University and received his doctorate in electrical engineering as well as his medical degree. He also completed post-graduate training in cardiovascular surgery and radiology at Stanford, the National Institutes of Health and the University of California, San Francisco.

Brody’s accomplishments have earned him fellowships at the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the American Institute of Biomedical Engineering, the International Society of Magnetic Resonance in Medicine, the American Heart Association, the American College of Radiology, and the American College of Cardiology. He is one of the few individuals to be a member of both the National Academy of Science’s Institute of Medicine as well as its National Academy of Engineering.
