CIRM Generating 25,000 Jobs and $200 million in Taxes for California
On January 27th, CIRM released an independent economic impact study that shows CIRM has already delivered significant financial benefit for the state with its first $1.1 billion in grants creating 25,000 job years and $200 million in new tax revenue through 2014. The jobs cover a wide range of industries and skills, from research scientists to laboratory assistants and staff, and including nearly 13,000 jobs in the construction and building trades.
Ellen Feigal, M.D., appointed as CIRM's first Vice President for R&D
CIRM has named Ellen Feigal, M.D., as its first Vice President for Research and Development effective January 31. Feigal previously served as Executive Medical Director for Global Development at Amgen, Inc. Feigal will report to CIRM President AlanTrounson and will work closely with other CIRM executives to build and manage the pre-clinical and clinical programs, both within California and with CIRM’s international collaborators, as well as interactions with the NIH, FDA and other regulatory bodies.
Tools and Technology II Awards
On January 27th, the CIRM Governing Board approved $32 million to fund 19 projects in the second round of Tools and Technology grant awards. The projects are intended to create new tools and technologies that overcome barriers to moving stem cell research into clinical trials.
New Governing Board Members Sworn in
The CIRM Governing Board swore in two new members at its January 27th meeting in Burlingame. The new members are: Kristiina Vuori, President of Sanford-Burnham Medical Research Institute, appointed by former Lieutenant Governor Abel Maldonado; and Bertram Lubin, President and CEO of Children’s Hospital and Research Center Oakland, appointed by Controller John Chiang. Nine other members were reappointed to second six-year terms.
