MEDIA ADVISORY Standards Working Group to Consider Informed Consent and Ethical Derivation of Stem Cells

SAN FRANCISCO, CA – On Thursday, December 1st, the Scientific and Medical Accountability Standards Working Group will meet to discuss the CIRM Draft Regulations

WHO: Scientific and Medical Accountability Standards Working Group—five patient advocates of the Independent Citizens’ Oversight Committee (ICOC), nine scientists and clinicians nationally recognized in the field of stem cell research, four medical ethicists, and the chairperson of the ICOC

WHAT: The Standards Working Group will meet to review the language of the CIRM Draft Regulations and consider issues including:

  • Informed Consent Requirements (Section 100007)–Requirements for informing donors and participants involved in CIRM funded research.
  • Ethically Derived (Section 100006)–Requirements for stem cells to be considered “ethically derived.”

WHY: The Standards Working Group makes recommendations to the 29-member ICOC that governs the CIRM on scientific, medical and ethical standards pertaining to stem cell research.
