CIRM 2.0: A new way to get funding faster

The mission of CIRM is to accelerate stem cell treatments to patients with unmet medical needs. To better serve this mission, we launched “CIRM 2.0” in January 2015, a radical overhaul of the way we do business, one that introduces more efficient systems and programs and that places added emphasis on speed, partnerships, and patients.

Here’s what you can expect from CIRM 2.0 funding:

  • More frequent and predictable partnering opportunities where applications get rapid review, quick funding decisions, streamlined contracting and the prompt initiation of research.
  • Post-award, CIRM will be a more active partner with its recipients to further increase the likelihood of clinical success and help push a pre-clinical applicant’s research further along the funding pipeline towards clinical trials.

CIRM 2.0 Funding Opportunities

Under CIRM 2.0, we’ve launched new and improved funding opportunities in Clinical, Translational, and Discovery research. You can find out more by reading below or visiting our Funding Opportunities Page.

Clinical

The objective of the Clinical Program is to speed up support for clinical stage candidate stem cell treatments that demonstrate scientific excellence. Under this initiative, we will provide funding for eligible projects that are completing late stage preclinical development through any stage of clinical trial activity. CIRM currently offers three types of clinical trial stage projects:

  • Late stage preclinical projects
  • Clinical trial stage projects
  • Supplemental Accelerating Activities

For more on our Clinical funding opportunities, see our funding page.

Translational

The objective of the Translational Program is to create a highly competitive opportunity for promising stem cell-based projects that accelerate completion of translational stage activities necessary for advancement to clinical study or broad end use for any one of the following product types:

  • Stem cell based therapeutic candidates
  • Diagnostics based on stem cells
  • Medical devices for a stem cell based therapy
  • Novel tools that will aid in the development of a stem cell-based treatment

For more on our Translational funding opportunities, see our funding page.

Discovery

The objective of the Discovery Program is to support exploratory research leading to the discovery of novel stem cell technologies to ultimately improve patient care. CIRM currently offers three types of Discovery stage research opportunities:

  • The Inception awards: seed funding for early-stage projects
  • The Quest awards: new stem cell-based technologies
  • The Challenge awards: overcoming key challenges in the stem cell field
